How To Know If Your Transponder or Car Key Fob Needs To Be Replaced?

All Pro Locksmiths • March 10, 2023

The transponder and car key fob are essential components of your vehicle’s security system. They allow you to start your car, lock and unlock your doors and activate your alarm system. However, like any other device, they can fail over time, causing inconvenience and potential security risks. In this blog, we’ll discuss common signs that indicate when your transponder or car key fob needs to be replaced.

Engine Unresponsive

One of the most common signs that your transponder or car key fob needs to be replaced is when your engine fails to start. This can happen when the battery in your key fob is weak, or the transponder chip in your key is damaged or malfunctioning. When this happens, your car’s security system may prevent the engine from starting, leaving you stranded. In this case, you may need to have your transponder or key fob replaced by a professional locksmith.

Unable To Lock & Unlock

Another sign your transponder or car key fob needs to be replaced is when you are unable to lock or unlock doors using the key fob. If your key fob’s buttons aren’t working correctly, this may be due to a damaged circuit board or worn-out buttons. In some cases, the problem may be as simple as a dead battery, which can be easily replaced. However, if you have replaced the battery and the problem persists, it may be time to replace your key fob.

Setting Off Your Car Alarms

If your car alarm goes off for no apparent reason, this could be a sign that your transponder or car key fob needs to be replaced. Faulty transponders or key fobs can cause your car’s security system to malfunction, triggering the alarm even when there is no threat. If this happens frequently, it may be time to replace your transponder or key fob to avoid unnecessary alarms and potential security risks.

Loose Buttons

If the buttons on your key fob feel loose or wobbly, this could indicate the internal components are starting to wear out. Over time, the buttons can become less responsive or stop working altogether. This can be frustrating, especially if you rely on your key fob to lock and unlock your car. In this case, have your key fob replaced by a professional locksmith.

Proximity

If you find you need to stand in closer proximity to your car for the key fob to work, this could be a sign of a weak battery or a damaged key fob. Key fobs use radio frequencies to communicate with your car and if the signal is weak, you may need to be closer to the car for it to work. However, if you have replaced the battery and the problem continues, it’s probably time for a new key fob.

Visible Damage

If your key fob is visibly damaged or broken, this is a clear sign it needs to be replaced. Physical damage can cause the internal components of the key fob to malfunction, making it difficult or impossible to use. In this case, have your key fob replaced as soon as possible to minimise the risk of further problems.
